France 2010 - Carcassonne

We drove into the car park situated at the base of the citadel of Carcassonne on one of the hottest days of our holiday.  Carcassonne is a most beautiful place and once you look past all the tourist tat shops you can start to let your imagination go and drift back to its medieval past.

Carcassonne - Outside the town wall

A few years ago I read a wonderful book by author Kate Mosse called ‘Labyrinth’.  This was the first time I had heard of Carcassonne and it caught my imagination.  A couple of years later I read a second book by Kate called ‘Sepulchre’ which again had scenes set in and around Carcassonne but in a different era.  When last year we decided to come on holiday to France it was the one place I had to visit whilst I was in the region.
I do have a hidden passion for architecture and find myself looking past more modern parts to the citadel and trying to identify the medieval parts which if you go to the most inner and then to the outer areas you can can quite easily see this and take your imagination back to those times and picture what it must have been like just trying to survive at that time in France.
I would like to go back and explore more of the regions castles and architectural gems.
