France 2010 - Villa Claire

The night was a little scary due to the fact of our remote location and the darkness outside, apart from the security light coming on all the time and the sound of the wind in the trees made for a scary night of restless sleep thinking someone was going to try and break in to the villa.

In the light of morning all our fears were dispersed as we looked out at the blues of the Mediterranean sea and sky...

Pug went out with the camera for a look around the grounds of the villa.  He came across a large blue spotted lizard which he then proceeded to spend the rest of our time at the villa hunting this creature down for the perfect photo.

Mrs Lizard

When we spoke to Mdme Butterfly about the lizard she showed us some pictures she had taken of the lizard and her mate, an even bigger lizard than the one we had seen.  Unfortunately she had not seen the larger male lizard this year, only the female, which was sad.  She was also showing us some photos of the all snow they had in the winter.  It looked really strange to see all the cacti and palm trees covered in snow and ice.  Unfortunately a lot of the trees & cacti had been badly damaged in these unusual weather conditions.  This was probably what took the lizard.

The rest of us got up and as we as yet hadn’t got any food our first task was to find a shop.  When we booked the holiday I wanted to be able to pop out in the morning to a patisserie and local shops to buy food and cook up some lovely meals for us in the villa relaxing with a glass of wine.  This was not to be as we discovered that the nearest shops were at least a 20 min drive away.  Mdme Butterfly gave us some advice to go to a new Carrefore (The Tesco of France) supermarket on the outskirts of the town where the locals go.  So off we went.

We got lots of lovely food to take back to the villa.  I had an idea that I would make some cakes but had no idea what self raising flour or baking powder was in French so when I saw a bag of flour with a picture of a cake on the front I took a chance and bought it along with the regular ingredients of sugar, butter and eggs.  Another idea, after seeing some blackberries growing at the villa, was to make a blackberry and apple tart, so I brought some ready made pastry and apples.

We made our way back to the villa to off load our purchases into the huge double fridge freezer in the kitchen.

We changed into our bathing costumes went for a refreshing swim in the amazing swimming pool.  After our swim we had a late breakfast of fresh baguettes with jam,  along with a refreshing cup of Earl Grey tea.

Relaxing in the pool.

We then spent the rest of the day in and out of the pool.  Myself, I made a start  reading my selected holiday read, ‘Genesis’ and relaxed…
