France 2010 - Travelling North through France

We got up early, packed the car and cleaned the apartment.  We got approval from the manager and set off on our return journey home.  Dyl was insistent that his toe was ok and didn’t want to go to the hospital so we set off north across France.

Our first destination on the final leg of our tour was Doue-la-Fontaine where there were a number of Troglodyte dwellings some of which had been turned into visitor centres.  We called into the local tourist information office where a very helpful assistant recommended Rochemenier, just 6km North West. We also took this opportunity to book a hotel in Sanmur with the help of our French speaking friend. When we arrived in Rochemenier we stopped in the car park and quickly had some lunch before starting our tour.  It was very strange the way these people had burrowed into the soft rock to create homes.  It was an incredibly hot day and being able to wander around these cave-like rooms was a welcome respite; you begin to realise why they made such an effort.
