France 2010 - Le Mans and Rouen

We decided against having breakfast at the hotel so set off early and headed towards some ancient stones we had located in the map but when we arrived at the location discovered that the area had been fenced off and turned into some kind of medieval theme park.  Disappointed we just found a picnic table and had our breakfast before setting off towards Le Mans.

I had seen Le Mans on the map and, as it was on our route back to Calais, I wanted to visit the race track.  Unfortunately as we approached the town we were unable to find a track or any signs indicating how to get there. Unable to make any progress we had to head off again on our route home.

We arrived at Rouen which again, like Le Mans was quite industrial and had unfortunately been nearly completely destroyed during the war.  Apparently there were some small areas in the town centre which escaped the bombing so we parked up and walked in to have a look around.  I have to say I was quite disappointed; the city was not the most impressive and quite dull but that was down to the wartime bombing.  The most impressive thing was a rather peculiar “modern art” rework of the Boeldieu Bridge by Belgian sculpture Arne Quinze seemingly made out of what can only be described as builder’s planks. We jumped back into the car and headed out of the town.  As we pulled up at some traffic lights, Pug was complaining that he couldn’t see the colour of any of the traffic lights and that they were for some reason facing the wrong way.  The next thing that happened was that a bus came motoring around the corner heading straight for us.  We were on the wrong side of the road trying to pull out of a one way street onto the wrong side of the road. Oops.  Luckily the bus didn’t hit us and we managed to pull out of the junction in one piece.
