Used Grow Bags....

Here is what I do with the used grow bags when it's time to throw out the old tomato plants...

For my tomatoes this year I had decided instead of putting 3 plants in to the grow bag lying flat, I cut the bag in half, tipped it on it's end and planted one plant in each half.
As my tomato plants have one by one come to the end of their productive lives I have been re-using the soil in the bags for my winter crops.
I cut off the tomato plant and tipped out the soil into a planter, big enough to hold the contents of half a grow bag.  Use a hand fork to break up the soil and remove the main stalk and root of the tomato.  Make sure the soil is fairly lump free.  I then mixed in a little sprinkling of fertiliser just to give the soil a boost.
I have then been doing this approximately one tomato a week as they finish producing tomatoes.  I have then been sowing a few winter hardy seeds into the pots and placing in the greenhouse.
'Sow' far I have planted the following:
Lettuce & Lambs Lettuce - As I thin the baby lettuce I use it in salads.  This will keep you in a bit of salad all winter.
Kale - This has grown into small seedlings which I have this week planted out into the allotment.  This may be the wrong thing to do but gardening is all about trial and error sometimes to see what happens.  Sometimes it works and sometime it does not.  I put a cloche over half so see if it helps or not.
Peas - This year I planted a variety of pea called 'Meteor'.  I had problems in that they didn't grow very well and seem stunted and didn't produce many peas.  I have now discovered that are a dwarf variety and perfect for growing in pots.  So I have therefore planted these in one of my grow bag pots.  They are are already 20cm tall and starting to flower so I may have some late peas if I am lucky.
Unused Carrots - After finding out that carrot seed does not keep and I have some left over I thought I would sow a few in one of the pots to see what happens.  Seed have just germinated.
Pak Choi - Mmmm.  Still having a problem with something eating them.  They are goring though but look a bit munched.
Spinach Beet - Sown yesterday so will see what happens.
